About us

The IWCB was founded in early 2004 by Lesley Rankin, the wife of the British Consul-General to Boston. Having traveled all over the world she was surprised to find that Boston did not have an International Women’s Club. At first the Club had one event a month, but gradually as we all got to know each other better our activities have increased.

In November 2004 Charlotte Knox started the monthly e-newsletter and later also took over the running of the Club.

In June 2005 Mary Glynn, who as a professional trailing wife has moved twenty two times, started the casual monthly drop-in coffee mornings in Central Boston. It has been really important, especially as a way of introducing ourselves to prospective members. We all sympathize with the difficulties arriving in a new place with no friends or contacts.

In November 2005 Pat Mallows started the Book Club which has been great fun. We have all enjoyed reading and discussing a great variety of books some of which we would never come across by ourselves.

Our first committees were elected at the 2006 New Year’s Planning Meeting. Their contribution to the running of the Club has made it much more dynamic, exciting and professional. Find out more about the members of the Executive Committee by clicking on the “Committees” link above.

Many members are here because of their partner’s work. We also have North American members who have relocated from other parts of the country or from abroad, and who are keen to meet people from everywhere. And New Englanders, who want to show their beautiful city to newcomers and help them with their adjustment.
